First, we helped people fall in love with the much misunderstood nudibranchs in our Great Sea Slug Beauty Contest. Then, we are raising awareness about coral reefs with our community-based Craft Coral Reef project. But what is next on our list for getting people to take real steps for healthier oceans? The new Cards, Coral & Kids campaign we started on May 1, 2012.
Here’s the idea in a nutshell: H2O will make a card game, similar to the fantasy world game so popular with kids these days. But this game will be based on building stable food chains and a health ocean environment for coral reefs, based on actual coral reef life instead of made-up monsters. The game will also give or take points based on players’ actions in the real world, which will encourage people to transfer what they learn from the game into more environmentally-friendly behavior in their own lives.
Sounds great, doesn’t it? Here is the catch: We need support. We need money to help us do the research to make the game. So we are running a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo to help us raise the money. Crowdfunding websites like IndieGoGo let us raise a little money from a lot of people. Instead of trying to find one donor to give us $10,000, it helps us find 10,000 people to give us $1, or maybe 1,000 people to give us $10.
So you don’t have to be wealthy to support our campaign. If you like the idea and can give $1, $2, or $5, great! If you can give any more than that, even better! Or if you can’t give anything, or this isn’t really your cup of tea, that’s fine as well. But do us a favor–pass it on to someone(s) else who might be interested.
If nothing else, check out our project video at our IndieGoGo page. We don’t want to give away the surprise, but let’s just say that it stars some of your favorite ocean creatures from both our Sea Slug and Craft Coral Reef projects–along with our H2O member teens, of course. At that page, you can also find out about how to donate, and what you get in return for your money. Oh, did I forget to mention in exchange for your contribution, you get PERKS? Like an autographed deck of cards BEFORE they are available to the public, or your own hand-crocheted piece of coral?
If you want a sneak peak at our plans for the game, check out our Set of 12 Sample Prototype Cards or our Draft Game Rules. Find out how you can get involved in this fun and exciting project!
